Cary S. Leibowitz - Candyass: “A nerd on the run”

This guy is a whiner and a failure - a real loser, at least if you believe his art. How does it feel to always get the short straw and how does it feel to never be good enough? Groan, but instead of giving up completely you can make being the underdog into a lifestyle. Candyass has lived with his self loathing so long that he cannot be separated from it. A fact that becomes apparent in his crazy toys which have texts such as: “I’m in love with my misery so I can’t marry you”. When this artist comes dangerously close to what we call success, he usually compares himself with someone who is more successful: “Jessica Diamond is more famous than me”. If you are an escaped nerd then you have every reason to be worried. In one of his pieces Candyass writes that he must watch his weight for the rest of his life - is there really nothing better to complain about? No, to provide space to that which, depending on societal power relations, ends up “outside” and to continue to whine in the margin is a vital way of minimising the oppression.
