Carsten Höller: "Killing Children III" With each day that goes by Christmas approaches complete with traditions and preparations. Most people look forward to the spirit of Christmas: peace and happiness. Children eagerly await their Christmas presents. So why not be pragmatic this year and combine business with pleasure. In German artist Carsten Höller's installation ''Killing Children III" one can find plenty of ideas and tips. Höller's work examines our development and offers a critique of civilisation. A mother who kills her own child can hardly be regarded as anything else other than pathological - an act that completely destroys the psychological mechanisms which form the basis of a civilised parenthood. But if one takes a closer look at the circumstances which have been noted in cases with these types of tragedies mental illness in the mother is too simple an explanation. Infanticide can also be the desperate decision of a rational strategist allocating scarce resources. | |||
