Larry Clark

''I was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1943, when I was sixteen I started shooting amphetamine..."

Larry Clark has in the past been a pimp, a drug user and violent, but above all he was an abused and uncared for child. The only words he remembers his father saying were: ''You look like shit". A fact that has naturally affected his art. The photographs from ''Tulsa" and ''Teenage Lust" have little to do with formal perfection . Most of them were taken under the influence of drugs or alcohol, the artist is often part of the unpleasant scenes he portrays. The images appear therefore ''unconscious" - a fact which strengthens their feeling of presence. Larry Clark is in other words not a ''camera" that registers situations and events, but rather a person crying out for help. Look at me, understand me, help me...
