Chris Burden

To everyone's surprise the artist Chris Burden is still alive! He has managed to survive events that few others could. In 1971 he allowed a friend to shoot him in the arm from a distance of five metres. A few years later he crawled naked through broken glass with hands behind his back. These legendary performances during the early 1970s turned Chris Burden into a legend within contemporary art. He chose to use his own body as object in his performances and unlike other performance artists he suffered both physically and psychically in his work. Neither gallerists nor viewers knew where all this would end. Could the artist go so far as to injure a viewer? Burden's controversial work attracted much attention from a shocked media and public. His performances became examples of just how violent the most extreme art could be during the 1970s. Journalists wondered whether Burden would reach 30.

In 1974 Chris Burden collected all the documentation from his best known performances from the beginning of the 1970s. This material was later presented as a book at the Riko Mizuno Gallery in Los Angeles and at Ronald Feldman Fine Arts in New York. This is the first time Chris Burden's "Deluxe Photobook" has been exhibited in Sweden.
