Jim Isermann: ''Cubes"

Jim Isermann recycles modernism's ideal forms in his textile cubes, however, their accelerating colour schemes hardly convey a spiritual vision a la modernism's clear primary colours. Rather perception crashes in a psychedelic chaos. If the colours and the geometric pattern make one think of the futuristic aesthetic of the 1960s, the production process and the material makes one think of another aspect of that decade, namely the hippie movement's interest for traditional handicrafts. This hybrid character consisting of several levels is typical for art in Los Angeles. How is one to understand them? Is it an investigation of traditional ideals? Are they meaningless cubes, or can they be used as furniture?
