Christine Ödlund: "The Role Anxiety Dilemma"

One day Christine experienced something that she had never experienced before and which she thought could never happen. As usual, she took her car (which by the way is also called Christine) to do some errands, the only difference from other days is that it was not Christine who was in control but rather the car Christine! From that moment on her own trustworthy banger was not so predictable, it had begun to live its own life, with its own will, thoughts and feelings. This became, of course, something of a problem. Where do we draw the line between human and machine? In their correspondence during the 1930's Walter Benjamin and Theodore Adorno discussed new technology and the historic relationships between technology and the body. Already then it was evident that a strain of anthropomorphism is something that easily appears in the relationship between man and machine. Relations have hardly been less complicated since then.
